Hi! My name is Rob.

I’ve been programming for about 8 years. I’m a freelance programmer living in Tokyo.

I like a ton of different foods, but ramen and nice cheeses are near the top of my list.

I exercise in the gym (sometimes), and play video games (often).

I regularly work on developing my language learning app, Kichi.

I love teaching.

How did I learn programming, and what is my experience?

I actually self-studied programming after graduating college. I moved to Japan and studied programming on the trains to-and-from teaching English lessons for a couple years.

I started by reading Programming for Dummies and studying a programming language called C# because I wanted to make my own games. After I studied a lot and made a small game, I got a job in the game industry!

Super quick, condensed work history list:

• I made games at a game company for about a year.
• I worked in a big outsourcing company doing lots of different web projects for another year.
• I worked in another big company and did mobile app development and a giant, internal project for another year.
• I realized I don’t like big companies, so I became a freelancer.
• I’ve since done a bunch of projects for lots of people: proof-of-concept MVPs for startups, Android TV apps, auth systems, code tools to help developers debug and work faster, training new team members, etc.
• Even though I’m a freelancer, I’ve been working at my current company for a bit over a year. I manage a few other software developers.
